LMU Hospital and LARALAB Partner on Generative AI for Cardiac Treatments

MUNICH, GERMANY, March 19th, 2025 / LARALAB GmbH, a pioneer in AI-driven medical imaging, and LMU Hospital, one of Germany’s leading cardiovascular centers, have entered into a multi-year clinical partnership to advance Generative AI for the treatment of mitral regurgitation. The collaboration aims to improve patient outcomes by leveraging deep learning and state-of-the-art multimodal AI models to optimize transcatheter mitral valve edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER).

Developing Predictive AI for Mitral Valve Repair

The project aims to enhance patient outcomes by applying AI-driven analysis to improve decision-making in mitral regurgitation treatment. By integrating multimodal AI, the collaboration seeks to refine patient selection, predict procedural success, and optimize treatment strategies. Additionally, patients who may not benefit from M-TEER can be considered for alternative treatment options such as transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR), expanding access to more effective therapies.

The research is based on an extensive, high-quality dataset, including pre- and post-interventional TEE echocardiographic data from the mitral valve, supporting a more standardized and objective approach to analyzing patient-specific anatomical characteristics.

“We see enormous potential in AI-based predictive modeling to refine patient selection and procedural strategies,” says Prof. Dr. med. Jörg Hausleiter, Head of the Mitral and Tricuspid Valve Program and Deputy Director at the LMU Hospital. “By collaborating with LARALAB, we aim to develop and validate new AI solutions using retrospective data in the first project phase, with the potential to progress into a prospective study.”

A proof-of-concept prototype has already been successfully realized, demonstrating the feasibility of automated AI processing of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) data for M-TEER. The project is supported by leading cardiac imaging and interventional experts at LMU Hospital and LARALAB’s AI research team, with funding from the Bavarian Research Foundation.
